Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw

On my second, or maybe third, viewing of Avengers: Endgame, I sat next to a guy who’d never seen a single Marvel Cinematic Universe movie before. We chatted for a few minutes after the last of the credits rolled because I was curious on his take, and frankly, surprised that such a mythical creature as he even existed. He liked Endgame, and said it made him curious to see some of the other movies in the franchise. I answered a few questions for him regarding plot points he didn’t quite understand, and then we went our separate ways. Who would go see a movie that far along into an established universe without knowing any backstory? How could they possibly enjoy it? Why?

And… cue me this past Friday sitting down to watch Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, without ever having seen more than five minutes of any Fast & Furious movie. Ever. But, the trailers looked fun, there didn’t appear to be the overly fetishized focus on cars, and nothing else out intrigued me. So why not? It shouldn’t be necessary to say expectations were low. I figured there’d be death defying-physics boggling stunts, and overly sexualized women, and buff dudes saving the day, and a few car tricks. I was not disappointed.

The 42cast Episode 30: Turning the Clocks Back

Sometimes just reading Geek Stranger isn’t enough. Sometimes you just have to listen… and where can you listen to me geek out with fellow nerds about a time travel show that refuses to quite die, and has actually “changed” time at least once? Listen in as we chat about NBC’s more recent attempt at genre, Timeless and about history and science and character development and whether or not we all wish a sibling could be wiped from the timeline:

Last year was the year of time travel shows. Most of them were canceled, but one series, Timeless, turned back the clocks and changed its destiny. In this episode we take a look back at Timeless season one to discuss it’s premise, characters, cast, and why we felt that this show is worthy of going on.

The 42cast Episode 27: Heroes – Where Did It Go Wrong?

Sometimes just reading Geek Stranger isn’t enough. Sometimes you just have to listen… and where can you listen to me geek out with fellow nerds about that television show that was soooo good, and then soooo bad, but you’ll always remember that first season for all the feels it gave you? Come along as we talk about NBC’s attempt to recapture the magic that was one and a half seasons (let’s say) of Heroes with their continuation. It’s not just an attempt to cash in on the super hero craze! But also, it is definitely an attempt to cash in on the super hero craze. Is it worth watching? Can lightning strike twice? Did you forget about it but now that I’ve reminded you, you kind of feel like-“Oh yeah, I mean to watch that.”? Well, give a listen before you do!:

This week we talk all about Heroes, the NBC drama that took the world by storm back in 2006. Heroes treated the idea of superpowers in a serious manner and paved the way for so many series that we know and love. Just about everyone agrees that Heroes started strong and then fell apart, but no one agrees on the when and how.

The 42cast Episode 18: Legion of Doom

Sometimes just reading Geek Stranger isn’t enough. Sometimes you just have to listen… and where can you listen to me geek out with fellow nerds about the CW’s Legends of Tomorrow season two? Listen as we try to decide if this is actually a really good show, despite its weaker first season, with characters and stories worth following, or if its just a fluke of focusing on the guys who make any story interesting- because everyone secretly loves the bad boys… :

The second season of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow brought a new direction, new characters, and some changes for some old ones. It also saw the formation of the Arrowverse’s first team of villains, The Legion of Doom. This week, The 42cast talks about the second season of Legends of Tomorrow and focuses in on the villains.
