What I’m Watching Now

July Binge Edition

It’s not just a question of how much I can watch between personal hygiene breaks; it’s a question of what’s good to binge out there right now! With a little more time than usual in July, I managed to knock out a few seasons of a few shows and break in the cushions on my couch far past the factory warranty levels…

The 42cast Episode 48: Welcome Back, Frank

Sometimes just reading Geek Stranger isn’t enough. Sometimes you just have to listen… and where can you listen to me geek out with fellow nerds about the not so morally ambiguous actions of Frank Castle AKA the Punisher? And you thought Daredevil’s real super power was getting the crap kicked out of him!:

The Punisher was the last of the Marvel Netflix series. The Punisher hadn’t been part of the original deal for the “Defenders” series between Marvel and the streaming service, but the popularity of the character in season 2 of Daredevil lead to quick negotiations and a series announcement. Dealing with the aftermath of Frank’s hunt of all those that he thought were responsible for the death of his family, the series delved into darker areas than the other Netflix series, while presenting a version of Frank Castle that was both familiar to comics readers but different than how he’d been depicted in any media before. In this episode we discuss how Jon Bernthal’s Punisher was different from those before. We also talk about the supporting cast, plot, and how it fits into the larger MCU. We also do a deep dive into the character of Billy Russo to determine his motivations and whether or not he was badly written. In the end we ask, “would we want Frank to meet the other characters in Marvel’s Defenders line and if so, who?” This week’s Five Minute Controversy asks if it’s a good idea for Marvel to stop making series with Netflix.

The 42cast Episode 36: Defenders Deploy

Sometimes just reading Geek Stranger isn’t enough. Sometimes you just have to listen… and where can you listen to me geek out with fellow nerds about that one time a blind lawyer, an alcoholic detective, a Harlem hero and DANNY RAND, THE IMMORTAL IRON FIST, PROTECTOR OF KUN LUN AND SWORN ENEMY OF THE HAND all got together to fight Sigourney Weaver? You’ll come for the tasty dumplings of justice, and stay for the delectable fortune cookie of character development that is Marvel’s Netflix’s Defenders:

Iron Fist season 2 drops today, so we decided to take a look at the last series to feature Danny Rand as Marvel’s Netflix Phase One comes to an end with The Defenders. Our panel of guests talk about how well the series worked in meshing the individual storylines together. We talk about how we liked the interaction between the character.

The 42cast Episode 15: The Fourth Defender

Sometimes just reading Geek Stranger isn’t enough. Sometimes you just have to listen… and where can you listen to me geek out with fellow nerds about Danny Rand, the Immortal Iron Fist? He’s the one you love to hate and hate to… well… no. Don’t worry, it’s not an entire bash fest. We find the redeemable in Marvel and Netflix’s after thought of a series:

This is it, the fourth Netflix series co-produced with Marvel, which introduced the last of the four characters that they’d promised since 2014. After three amazing series, the public was primed for Iron Fist but for some reason it didn’t hit as well as the other three. In this episode we dive into that.

The 42cast Episode 13: Streams do Come True

Sometimes just reading Geek Stranger isn’t enough. Sometimes you just have to listen… and where can you listen to me geek out with fellow nerds about getting progressively poorer as we admit we might have a problem with streaming content? Where can you listen to some of us struggle against the injustice, and some of us admitting we’re going all in, warp core to the wall? It’s episode 13 of the 42cast! Listen in. I mean, unless you’re superstitious and scared… :

It seems like you can’t look at the internet anymore without reading a report about some new streaming service starting up. This episode we look into what’s going on with all these services. Can they survive with a single, popular product? Can the consumer base afford to have so many streaming services at a time? What happens to Netflix and Hulu as more and more providers jump ship? How much will piracy effect things? Just what does happen when you cross the streams?

The 42cast Episode 2: The Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Sublimation

Sometimes just reading Geek Stranger isn’t enough. Sometimes you just have to listen… and where can you listen to me geek out with fellow nerds about the arrival of Marvel’s most flaming biker matching wits and sins with Coulson and his wayward protege Skye? Daisy? Quake? Why in the second episode of the 42 Cast! Still with new-podcast-smell!.:

In this episode Ryan and Eric sit down with me to talk about the first half of the fourth season of Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. We also talk about Marvel’s The Inhumans as well as how what’s going on with Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. may impact the Netflix series and the rest of the MCU. It’s all that plus another Five Questions.
